STATIA
Magic!
February 21 - 28, 2026
St. Eustatius
If you have never heard about this small, undiscovered island in the Caribbean, it's only because it's a well-kept secret. St. Eustatius (Statia to the locals), the busiest port of the Caribbean in the eighteenth century, is now a sleepy island where time stood still. Unaffected by mass tourism St. Eustatius is not your average Caribbean island; imagine the Caribbean about 25 or 30 years ago and you get close.
We reach Statia by our private chartered plane from St. Maarten. The 20 minute flight takes us to our fairytale island.
The reefs surrounding St. Eustatius are flourishing in a protected marine park. Underwater you will experience what much of the Caribbean must have looked like many years ago. Most of the 36 official dive sites are located in the two reserves which cover a large part of the northern and southwestern waters. The eye-catching volcano “the Quill” dominates the island with its impressive crater and is responsible for the huge amount of lava flows and blocks under the surface. These old labyrinths of lava are now fully overgrown with corals and sponges. Combine these reefs with a number of historical dive sites and more recently sunk wrecks and you’ve got yourself a divers paradise!
This tiny eastern Caribbean island is 8 square miles and home to about 3500 people. The atmosphere on the island feels like going back in time, with hiking, dormant volcano and an absence of commercial shopping!
We will be staying at the historic Old Gin House, built in the 18th century. This ocean front property is next door to our dive operators, Scubaqua who have been guiding the magical diving around the island for the last 15 years.
The St. Eustatius waters are some of the most pristine in the Caribbean. We will dive walls, historical wrecks, patch reefs, macro dive sites, lava flows, boulder slides, and rock outcroppings. The visibility is beautiful and the dive sites are all within 15 minutes of the shore.
Almost all of the dive sites are moored to save the reef from anchorage. Some dives we will drift from one site to another to see the variety of underwater beauty. What we are unlikely to see is another group of divers!
The marine life is abundant and there are some fascinating archaeological sites; ancient ships from the 1700s that are covered in coral.
We will be staying at...The Old Gin House
The hotel has a beautiful restored historical lobby, ocean terrace and pool. The pool with towel service is located in the garden next to the garden view rooms.
The rooms and suites at the Old Gin House are split up in four categories. There garden view rooms, two ocean front rooms, an apartment and two one bedroom royal suites. Garden view rooms are furnished with large king size beds or with 2 queen beds and are equipped with WiFi and air conditioning.
All rooms have a small fridge. Full American Breakfast is included at the seaside restaurant with a killer view. The chef prepares fresh fish, Caribbean lobsters and of course the famous ribs. Cocktails and a fully stocked bar and wine cellar are available.
We will be diving with...Scubaqua
Scubaqua has taken top honors in Scuba Diving Magazine' Readers Choice Awards – not just once for 2025, but three times, with first place honors for Wreck Diving, Macro Life and Healthy Marine Environment.
Located next door to our hotel at the ocean, in a beautiful restored historical warehouse, Scubaqua offers a two-tank dive in the morning and a third dive in the afternoon. We will dive in small groups and before each dive we will have a detailed briefing about the dive site and plan.
All dives are guided (marine park rule), but Scubaqua guides are expert at not restricting your feeling of freedom. Custom-diving Scubaqua style means that the experienced diver gets the dives they want and the inexperienced diver gets any extra attention needed.
Dives are ‘limited’ by no decompression limits and your gas consumption, often exceeding 60 minutes. Every staff member is trained to respond in case of an emergency and the captain always stays on board when the divers are in the water.
For those who are nitrox certified nitrox is included. At the end of the day, there is no better place to have a cocktail and watch the sunset than on their porch.
